Bill Flores Discusses This Week in Washington

Statement

U.S. Representative Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statements regarding H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, his support of the discharge petition to force a House vote on H. Res. 109, the Green New Deal, his Spring Town Hall Event Series and more great economic news:

Climate Action Now Act
"Congress must work in a bipartisan fashion to provide real-world solutions to address climate change. Unfortunately, H.R. 9, the Climate Action Now Act, hurts America's economy while failing to address climate change. This bill attempts to force President Trump to keep the U.S. in the flawed Paris Agreement that will increase energy prices for low- and middle-income families, stifle our economy and hurt job opportunities for hardworking American families. Staying in the Paris Agreement would also tie our hands by allowing foreign governments to continue increasing their pollution emissions while controlling our nation's own decision-making autonomy.

"While nations such as China and India continue to increase their global emissions, the U.S. is leading the world in reducing greenhouse gas emissions thanks to America's innovation, can-do spirit and vibrant energy sector competition. We can build on this momentum by focusing on conservation; adaptation; and innovation, including robust research and development in new and more efficient energy technologies and the deployment of zero-carbon next-generation advanced nuclear power. Democrats should work with Republicans on real climate solutions that will allow the U.S. to accelerate our already successful climate solutions, instead of passing a messaging bill that has no chance of becoming law."

Green New Deal
"This week, I joined my fellow colleagues in signing a discharge petition to bring the Green New Deal resolution to the House floor for open debate and a vote. When introduced, it was hailed as a "major watershed moment' to fix climate change. Rather than debate the flaws and economy-killing provisions of the bill, House Democrat Leadership has squelched all bipartisan debate on this issue. I offered the Green New Deal as an amendment to the Democrats' H.R. 9, Climate Action Now Act, both in the Energy and Commerce Committee and on the House floor. Both times the Democrat Majority dismissed the issue on procedural grounds. The American people need to know where their elected representatives stand on this package of unrealistic, far-left socialist policies that hurt American families."

Spring Town Hall Events
"I appreciate the great participation that we had in this week's new-media town hall series. The questions and feedback I received are crucial for me to do my job as your representative. During these events, we had thousands of participants using web-portal, Facebook Live and telephone technologies; and we covered a broad cross-section of questions and current issues. We also received great feedback from the poll questions that we asked during the events (results listed below). I look forward to continuing these town hall events throughout the year."

During the events, which reached into all 12 counties of the 17th Congressional District, Congressman Flores was able to reach over 8,000 constituents. Combined, the two events had over 4,000 direct participants on the telephone, while the Facebook and Flores.House.gov/liveforum video feeds reached over 4,000 individuals.
